So far, only India and Egypt have reported cases of the dangerous disease
Patients with COVID-19 in Oman are developing a life-threatening fungal infection, the Associated Press reported. For the first time, doctors in the country have diagnosed patients with coronavirus and mucormycosis – an infection also known as black fungus.
A deadly infection has affected much of India since COVID-19
So far, only India and Egypt have reported cases of mucormycosis in patients with COVID-19. The infection, which often leads to a fatal outcome, spread very quickly in India during the second wave of the new coronavirus there.
Spending COVID-19 significantly reduces the risk of a new infection over the next ten months
In Oman, cases of mucormycosis have been isolated so far, but health authorities fear that an increase in the number of people infected with COVID-19 could lead to an increase in the number of people suffering from mucormycosis. The condition of the three patients who were infected with the new coronavirus and mucormycosis was not reported.
Dangerous fungal infections are relatively rare. It existed in India before the spread of COVID-19. Mucormycosis is caused by mold that forms in the soil and in decomposing organic materials. It most commonly attacks people with weakened immune systems, people with diabetes and those who are taking steroids.
