“Liepājas metalurgs” territory wants to be transformed into the greenest industrial park in Europe – in the Regions

The territory of the former “Liepājas metalurgs” could be transformed into the greenest industrial park in Europe in the future, Uldis Sesks (Liepāja party), Deputy Chairman of Liepāja City Council, said in an interview with “Rietumu Radio”.

“There is more and more talk around the world about climate issues and environmental pollution, so we are living in a time when we need to think more and more about building manufacturing companies that complement cities and the national economy without harming the environment as much as possible,” Sesks said.

Environmental protection today is also an important precondition for attracting new companies to the city, Sesks said.

At the meeting of Liepāja City Council today, a decision was made to start the development of a local plan, which amends the spatial plan of Liepāja city for the territory of the former factory “Liepājas metalurgs”.

It is planned to change the local plan for the territory of the former “Liepājas metalurgs” between Brīvības Street, Meldru Street, Liepājas ezers, Ezermalas Street, Parka Street and Zemnieku Street with the adjacent territories in the total area of 202 hectares.

The municipality wants to create preconditions for the development and integration of the hitherto closed industrial zone in the urban environment of Liepaja.

A working group will be established for the development of the local plan, which will include specialists from Liepāja Special Economic Zone Board, Liepāja City Construction Board, Liepāja Municipality Environment, Health and Public Participation Division, Liepāja Municipality Development Board, Liepāja City Real Estate Board, Liepāja Public Transport Agency, SIA ” Liepājas ūdens “and Liepāja City Utilities.

The development of the local plan will be led by Liepāja city architect Uģis Kaugurs.
