Communicated- Replaying Japan, it’s an annual conference launched in 2012 by the Ritsumeikan Center for Game Studies in Kyoto and dedicated to Japanese video game culture.
If this is not the first time that the colloquium has been held in a country other than the one where it was born – notably Nottingham in England in 2018 or Leipzig in Germany in 2016 – the year 2020 will mark a first for Belgium. ; in fact, it is the Liège Game Lab (LGL), laboratory for interdisciplinary studies of video games at the University of Liège, which will have the honor of hosting this year’s conference, entitled Ludolympics 2020 and dedicated to Esport.

Thus, the event will bring together researchers in game studies specializing in Japanese electronic sports and competitive practices, with keynote speakers Susana Tosca, professor of digital media at the Department of Arts and Humanities at Roskilde University ( Denmark) and Florent Gorges, president of Omake Books and co-founder of Pix’n’Love editions, French houses respectively devoted to geek and Japanese cultures for the first, and video games for the second.
Florent Gorges will hold a conference on the birth of Esport in Japan, while Susana Tosca will speak on the consideration of Japan as the “Promised Land” of video games by gamers, and the cultural mediation built around this video game culture. in the heart of the country.

But of course, the interventions of Susana Tosca and Florent Gorges will not be the only assets of Ludolympics 2020 : many other scientists will cover topics as diverse as questions of sociability in and around Japanese games, aesthetics, contemplation and storytelling in Japanese games, Japanese games and affects, and much more!
Organization of the conference
In practice, if the conference was initially scheduled to take place in the heart of the Ardente City during the month of August, the upheavals caused by COVID-19 are forcing the Liège laboratory to adapt in order to comply with the health measures in force and guarantee the everyone’s safety; so, it is online that those interested in the event will be able to follow this eighth edition of Replaying Japan. This will take place in two stages: from July 27, 2020, participants will post on the course « Replaying Japan 2020 » de la plateforme Jobs@Skills videos, texts or commented PowerPoints presenting their research. These contents will be available free of charge and viewable in advance. Then from August 10 to 13, 2020 will stand on the Discord « RJ2020 » live discussions between scientists and listeners, while keynote speakers will be broadcast live on the Liège Game Lab’s Twitch channel. During this second period, the various events will be held every day from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. (Belgian local time) in order to guarantee a comfortable participation to the various speakers since the scientists will be located in different time zones.
