Lidl has adjusted the service: what’s new at the checkout – when will Aldi follow?

Discounter giant Lidl introduced cash withdrawals nationwide at the end of August 2018. At that time, customers were given the opportunity to withdraw cash of up to EUR 200 from their checking account. The prerequisite was that they buy products from Lidl for at least ten euros, pay with a bank card and enter their four-digit PIN in the number field.

Lidl has now lowered the purchase value for a few months – the change has not been announced. With the first prospectus for 2020 that changes now. Customers find out in the discounter’s new advertising leaflet that from now on they only have to shop for 5 euros to withdraw up to 200 euros.

Many discounters and supermarkets now offer the service at the checkout. Supermarket giant Rewe is considered a pioneer. Customers have been able to withdraw money there since 2003. Five years later, the Rewe discounter Penny followed.

At the beginning, the minimum turnover in the branch was 20 euros. But the drugstore chain Netto Nord dropped to five euros for the first time.

Now Lidl could cause an earthquake, because dm, Aldi Süd, Aldi Nord, Rewe, Penny and Edeka are holding on to the 10 euro limit. But this is crumbling, as CHIP found out. As early as 2020, a purchase value of five euros could be established across the industry.

Shell is currently delivering the best deal for customers who want to withdraw money. At the company’s gas stations, bank customers of the Cash Group can even withdraw money without a minimum purchase value. The cash group includes credit institutions such as Unicredit, Berliner Bank, Comdirect, Commerzbank, Deutsche Bank, Postbank or Norisbank.
