Natural remedies: Licorice relieves discomfort after intubation

10/10/2013

Licorice has long been used in TCM. A current study has now scientifically proven the healing power of this natural substance known as licorice. The effect was examined in patients who suffered from a sore throat and hoarseness after an operation.

In their study, the researchers at the University Hospital Vienna examined patients who need a particularly thick tube after a lung operation and who therefore often suffer from a sore throat, hoarseness and cough.

Significant relief from licorice
The administration of licorice significantly reduced the frequency of postoperative complaints. More importantly, the patients were extremely satisfied and complained about significantly fewer side effects associated with anesthesia, such as a sore throat, cough and hoarseness.

Mechanism of action still unknown
However, the exact mode of action of licorice is still completely unclear. The research team is now working on decoding this. In this context, the anti-inflammatory effect and the positive influence on local wound healing, for example in oral and maxillofacial surgery, appear to be of particular importance.
