LibreOffice 7 handles Microsoft’s .docx files better

LibreOffice 7 is available in final version, after two months of beta testing. The open source office suite adopts a new theme on macOS, this will be the most visible difference in use if you use it on the Apple system. The interface is not significantly changed, but the icons are a little less dated than before.

Perhaps the most important change, however, is the full management of the patient. .docx, Word’s file format since version 2013. LibreOffice could already open and export documents in this format, but it is now the default choice for its text editor, instead of the old one .doc which is about to disappear. This should improve the compatibility of the open suite against that of Microsoft.

This update also improves the handling of new format files for Excel and PowerPoint, although the compatibility will not necessarily be as good as for those of Word. LibreOffice also promises performance improvements, but especially for Windows where a new graphics engine is in the game. There are still many other novelties, which you can discover in particular in this video.

Going back to Macs, LibreOffice 7 now requires macOS 10.12 as a minimum and you will need to stay on the previous version if you are using an older version of the system. The interface of the office suite is translated into French.
