Leukemia patients may benefit from defecation

Scientists at the Amsterdam UMC are trying to find a new way to help people with acute leukemia using poop. That is stated on the site of the medical center.

Doctors try to cure patients with acute leukemia by giving them bone marrow from a healthy person. But that treatment can go wrong because the new bone marrow turns against the patient’s organs. The researchers in Amsterdam hope that a ‘poop donation’ from a healthy donor can combat this reaction.

Fifteen leukemia patients already received poop from another, giving them a healthy gut flora and ten of them already benefited. The researchers now see leads for good therapy for these patients and are conducting further research.

Using one person’s poo to heal another is not new. People with intestinal problems are already treated in this way. In Leiden even the Dutch Donor Feces Bank (NDFB) is for poo donation.
