5G coverage will now also be available on aircraft after the European Commission brings mobile communications legislation in line with the latest communication technologies. European Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton said: “The sky is no longer the limit when it comes to high-speed, high-capacity connections.”
“5G will enable innovative services for people and growth opportunities for European companies,” added Breton.
The so-called “pico-cells” will be installed on the planes, which allow 5G coverage and connection with satellite transmitters around the world, informs boulevardbulgaria.bg.
The “pico cell” enables telephone calls, text messages and satellite data transfer to mobile handsets on Earth.
Airplanes will not be the only ones to benefit from the EC decision. It is planned to open 5G frequencies for Wi-Fi connectivity in cars, buses and other means of transport. EU member states have until 30 June 2023 to do so.
