Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – India is being hit by the second wave of Covid-19. There has been a surge in residents infected with the virus, which was first discovered in Wuhan China. This incident is even described as a tsunami.

Referring to Worldometer data, Monday (19/4/2021), the number of positive cases of Covid-19 in India has reached 15.06 million cases. India is now the country with the second largest Covid-19 case in the world. Previously this position was occupied by Brazil. The first rank is still the United States (US) with 32.4 million cases.

The explosion of the Covid-19 case in India is due to the fact that people are increasingly ignorant of implementing health protocols. The last few months have seen massive weddings in India. Many people don’t use masks when they leave the house.


Many people also gather for political campaigns without wearing masks and keep their distance. Some Indian states do carry out regional elections (pilkada) such as the Chennai and Tamil Nadu regions.

As for the religious rituals that are followed by many Indians. The ritual of washing away sins by bathing in the river Ganges. In this ritual, the use of masks and maintaining distance is not done properly.

“People are very complacent, acting as if the virus has disappeared, which is absurd,” said Senthil, a urologist in Coimbatore, India, quoted by the Guardian, Monday (19/4/2021).

“Now we are experiencing a wave of coronavirus infections that is worse than the first and the scale of the spread is getting worse.”

He cited the worsening spread in the Tamil Nuda region, where it took only 15 days to reach the highest infection rate ever reached by the Indian state, which is putting pressure on hospitals. Even in the state’s other major cities, the hospitals were almost full.
