Les Emaux de Longwy is calling on young designers to revisit their legendary ball vase

To celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Art Deco ball, the Manufacture des Emaux de Longwy invites young designers under 30 to reinterpret its masterpiece. The winner, chosen by a jury of personalities from the world of design and art, will see his creation published in a limited series.

The very first Art Deco ball from Emaux de Longwy was created by Maurice-Paul Chevallier. With its lush jungle decor, it received the gold medal at the 1931 International Exhibition. Since then, the famous spherical vase from the Lorraine factory has been decorated by many prestigious artists. Under 30

From March 15 to May 15, 2021, young designers or artists under 30, including still students, can submit their project. Three winners will be offered a multi-day immersion in the workshops. The first prize will be issued in a limited series and its new form will be included in the Manufacture’s catalog.

“At a time when a lot of events are canceled, we also wanted to bring the Manufacture’s contribution to supporting young designers … The idea is to create a story with them. We may be telling them that you don’t. Don’t know, we’re giving you a challenge. Even those who don’t win may come back to us in five or ten years for collaborations. “, explains, the director Martin Pietri.

You have to think of the drawing as a stained glass window or a Tintin comic strip

The only rule is that it must be a piece of earthenware biscuit that can withstand the constraints of a cloisonné enamel decoration. “You have to think of the drawing like a tattoo, a stained glass window or a Tintin comic book to have a line that defines the pattern and that it can be filled with colors”, explains Martin Pietri. The ball shape can therefore be blown up. It will remain in the Manufacture’s collections anyway.

Prestigious jury

The jury is chaired by the famous designer and interior architect India Mahdavi, who renovates luxury hotels around the world and has collaborated with many major brands, from Dior to Emaux de Longwy.

At his side, the design columnist of the Télématin show on France 2, Sylvie Adigard, the editor-in-chief of the decoration magazine AD or the director of National furniture.

The painter artist Francoise Petrovitch did not set any criteria for judgment, apart from surprise. “When you’re a designer, you never know what will work on the object you’re creating before it’s finished. The point of this competition is to build a bridge between the traditional side of the Manufacture and young creation. This will perhaps allow young people to take an interest in its history. “

The jury meets on June 4, 2021. The work of the winner will be presented to the public in January 2022.
