“To be able to lead the ‘Universum’ editorial team into a new decade, indeed into the future, is a huge honor. As a director and author, I have already learned the great importance of making documentaries for this broadcast format. This is the ‘Champions League’ in the documentary area. I want to live up to this high standard in my new role as editor-in-chief, ”Lercher is pleased about his new position.
Childhood dream fulfilled
After graduating from high school, the Graz native began to realize his childhood dream of “making documentaries all over the world” in the ORF regional studio in Styria. Initially in Current Service, he learned the business of news, radio and television journalists from scratch. From 1986 to 1991 Lercher worked there as a news and radio editor and moderator.

From 1988, Lercher worked as a designer, author and director of TV reports and documentaries for numerous broadcast formats on ORF and 3sat. Since 2012 he has been the author and director of “Universum” documentaries (nature and history). His most successful films include the “Universum” documentaries “Schladminger Bergwelten” (2013), “Austria – Land of the Green Borders” (2014) and “Europe’s Last Nomads” (2016).
Andrew Solomon takes over
Lercher’s latest film for “Universum” will follow in 2020 with “Portugal – Wilderness between Land and Ocean”. In 2017 he designed the film “Styria – Connected Across All Borders” for “Universum History”.
As an author and director of international “Universum” documentaries, he was also the link between the editorial team and the co-production partners. Now he takes over responsibility for the ORF “Universum” editorial office in Vienna from Andrew Solomon, whose contract expires in the summer.
“Experienced documentary and journalist”
“With Gernot Lercher, an internationally recognized Austrian nature film director takes over the management of this area, which is so important for ORF. Whether the diversity of our ecosystems from the Limestone Alps to the Brahmaputra or the fascinating microcosm of bumblebees and garden birds – nature issues are very important to our society. It is all the more important that an experienced documentary and journalist, who has worked successfully for ‘Universum’ for years, will now lead the editorial team into a multimedia future secured by technical expertise “, program director Kathrin Zechner Lercher wished all the best for his new task.
