The prize is awarded every year to a city, town or municipality in the Asturias region that is committed to the preservation of historical, cultural and artistic heritage. The award is part of the Princess of Asturias Prize, an award presented each year by the Princess of Asturias Foundation in the Spanish Autonomous Region of Asturias.
14-year-old Princess Leonor is currently honorary president of the foundation behind the awards. In this capacity, she was also allowed to address the community on Saturday under the approving supervision of King Felipe, Queen Letizia and her sister Sofia.
