It folds beautifully, and becomes a versatile work / pleasure tool according to your needs: a mini-laptop, a fixed station, a tablet. We tried it for a couple of weeks: walking around it, as far as possible in the red / orange zone where we are, satisfactory. The X1 Fold applies very well to needs of smart working not (only) at home, with the granting of moments of leisure on the same device, and the wow effect among those present ensured. Everyone asks to try it, to touch it: suitably sanitized, even better with gloves (the touch ones, so you can use the touch on the screen) and a little attention, it is granted. the first of its category, as mentioned, and the inevitable curiosity: the concept that of carry small, use big (bring it small, use it large), linked to the double-handed use of folding screens already seen on smartphones (therefore on much smaller sizes), a market that according to MarketWatch ready to take off to become a sizeable $ 170 billion by 2024.

But doesn’t it break?, the most common question. Yes, because folding a screen (still) makes an impression, we’re not used to it: Lenovo guarantees at least 30,000 open-and-close, therefore a 4 years of average use. In the center of the screen, where the oled bends, there are two slight inflections, visible only by backlighting when the screen is off. But no, it doesn’t break. the debut of a series that we are sure will have a very interesting future: screens are becoming more and more the center of our life, an easy prophecy of years ago that has never found its full realization as in this period of limited movements. Having them always with you, foldable, therefore beautiful to use (also because they are larger than those of a telephone) and comfortable to carry, will the new black of tomorrow’s technology. But before you run out (!) Or click on site from Lenovo to buy it, you need to know the price: it starts from 2860 euros, for the wi-fi only version and with a 256 Giga disk, you will get to 4 thousand if you wantalways on guaranteed by 5G coupon. Not a joke for nothing, we are well aware of that. The X1 Fold, on the other hand, is a concentrate of high-level engineering, not surprisingly it is part of the ThinkPad range, that brand acquired by Lenovo from IBM in 2005 and which guarantee the high-end of the brand: in the review guide we talk about 12 military-grade certifications on robustness.

And if this innovation perfectly complies with the needs of the new normality, that is, a versatile device for the decentralized professional or for the different needs of a family called en masse to digital (plus the touch needs of the younger generation), it must be said that the Fold was actually conceived in the research and development offices of the Chinese giant in 2016. The price of the first of the series, as well as the cost of materials (the 11 layers of which compound, including one of graphite) and engineering, also discounts over 4 years of work. If you can’t resist it, and you can afford it, do well: the X1 Fold is a great product. Of course, it must be said that the integrated bluetooth keyboard – a thin layer of well-structured plastic, with mini-usb and pen holder – a bit small, because designed to merge into the closed pc block. But getting used to it is enough, and using a standard size keyboard when the Fold becomes just a screen – maintained vertically from the support integrated into the leather cover – when used as a fixed station. In this setting it becomes interesting to use the X1 also as a sole computing unit: closed and stored in a drawer or on the shelves of a library, we tested it with a bluetooth mouse and keyboard and connected to a monitor such as the ThinkVision T27h – also it under test: a real spectacle -, and the effect as well as a bit magical (the computer is there but you can’t see it) perfectly functional.

The screen as mentioned is an oled (from LG) 4: 3 (open), touch with a resolution of 2048×1536. The 50 Wh battery e it tends to be short-lived if the pc used consistently. Keyboard and stylus can be purchased separately. It is therefore interesting to briefly talk about the software: if the operating system obviously Windows 10, note the customization made by Lenovo. In particular the Mode Switcher that allows you to manage the use of the screen: when folded at 90 or more degrees or even when open, we can decide to divide it in two, showing two different screens, as if they were two separate screens. You can therefore use it as a small laptop even without the physical keyboard, then writing on the virtual one, or use the lower part to take notes with the stylus, while at the top you are attending a meeting. In short, it bends to our every need, but as mentioned it does not break.
