Leisure time – Darmstadt – gardening in the city is booming: Corona fuels urban gardening society

Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) – It is sown, plowed and harvested: New projects around the topic of urban gardening are emerging across Hesse. Especially since the beginning of the corona pandemic, the interest in a healthy diet with vegetables and fruits from their own cultivation has increased, says Juliane Ranck from the “Vegetable Heroes” project in Frankfurt. In this way, gardens are being created in major Hessian cities that people create and plant on fallow land in a joint initiative.

“During the lockdown, it was a welcome change for many people to be active in the fresh air in our gardens,” says Ranck. “It is the time of urban gardening because many leisure activities were extremely limited by the Corona measures last year.” Due to the great interest, a long waiting list for participation in the green space project has now arisen.

In other cities, too, the demand for green spaces that can be built on is continuing. “Every year more parcels are made available,” explains Darmstadt spokesman Daniel Klose. Although there are now over 500 such gardens in Darmstadt alone, the fields are always fully booked. “Conversations show that the perception of the gardens in front of one’s own front door increased in Corona times and that interest in taking on green space sponsorships was aroused,” explains Klose.
