Leipzig keeps chances alive with miraculous victory, EL ticket for Vilhena | NOW

Thanks to a spectacular 3-4 win over Istanbul Basaksehir on Wednesday, RB Leipzig kept a close eye on wintering in the Champions League. In group E, Tonny Vilhena secured Europa League football with FC Krasnodar.

Leipzig seemed to be losing expensive points in Turkey. The German top club led 0-2 and 1-3 thanks to goals from Yussuf Poulsen, Nordi Mukiele and Dani Olmo, but Irfan Kahveci made it 3-3 just before time with his third nice goal.

However, the last word was to Alexander Sørloth. The substitute former striker of FC Groningen first hit the bar without even realizing it and signed deep in the extra time with a shot for the winning goal.

The victory brings Leipzig to nine points. There are just as many as competitor Manchester United, which will take on Paris Saint-Germain later in the evening. The French also have a chance of the next round with six points.

In Krasnodar, where ‘just’ supporters sat in the stands, the winning goal in the 71st minute came in the name of former FC Groningen and PSV striker Marcus Berg. Vilhena played the entire game as a controlling midfielder.

The victory over Rennes means that with three points ahead of the French competitor, Krasnodar is certain of third place in the group and cannot be overtaken by mutual results. Group mates Chelsea and Sevilla are already certain of the knockout phase of the Champions League.
