Leipzig beats BVB: dream comeback for Marco Rose

Status: 09/12/2022 00:01

Marco Rose’s Bundesliga comeback could not have gone better: with RB Leipzig he clearly won the Bundesliga against his former club Borussia Dortmund.

Willi Orban (5th minute) gave Leipzig the lead at the start of matchday 6, Dominik Szoboszlai stepped up just before the break (45th). Amadou Haidara (84th) set up the final point for RB. For RB it was the second win of the season, Dortmund lost for the second time and missed the leap to the top of the table.

RB Leipzig’s Orban scores early – Szoboszlai late in the first half

Rose’s first minutes could definitely have been worse: After a small swing at the start, Leipzig took the lead: After a corner kick from the right, Orban ran free in a wide arc into the BVB penalty area and hit his head. Dortmund goalkeeper Alexander Meyer, who, as in the Champions League, replaced the injured Gregor Kobel, conceded his first goal after just five minutes in his first Bundesliga game.

RB then earned the advantage afterwards: BVB were a bit too airy in defense against quick counter-attacks from Leipzig and Dortmund themselves didn’t have a good chance of getting in front of Peter Gulacsi’s goal despite having the ball . The Austrian double six with Xaver Schlager and Konrad Laimer repeatedly successfully broke Edin Terzic’s eleven combinations. Just before the half-time whistle, the home side made it 2-0 when Szoboszlai simply held on after a 22-metre Leipzig pass and the ball hit the top right corner.

The BVB pushes, but the Leipzig Roses meet

As the picture did not change in the second half, BVB coach Terzic drafted two options after less than an hour: Youssoufa Moukoko and Giovanni Reyna replaced Julian Brandt and Marius Wolf. Indeed, this has given a little momentum. After 62 minutes, Reyna crossed hitherto unseen Anthony Modeste, whose promising volley was set too high.

But the BVB lacked the necessary spirit to really put pressure on very stable Leipzig. The hosts then concentrated even more on counter-attacks and set up a very stable defensive chain around Orban and former Dortmunder Abdou Diallo, who mostly did their job without any frills. Shortly before the end, Haidara finally closed the game when he only had to welcome a cross from the agile Timo Werner into an empty net (84th).

Leipzig and Dortmund have asked for the Champions League

Both Leipzig and Dortmund have two football heavyweights ahead of them in the Champions League on Wednesday. Leipzig travel to the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu against Real Madrid (September 14, 2022 at 21:00). Dortmund are fighting Manchester City on the important points. In the Bundesliga, the gialloneri invite you to the Revierderby against FC Schalke 04 next weekend (Saturday 17 September 2022 at 15:30). Leipzig are to start their top game in Gladbach three hours later.
