Lehel District Committee Wants Pumuckl Traffic Lights in Munich’s Altstadt/Lehel District

München – Everyone agrees on the subject: across all parties, from the CSU to the Greens, the district committee (BA) Altstadt/Lehel wants to erect a monument to Pumuckl.

The traffic lights at three intersections should, as is already known from the same-sex couples in the Gärtnerplatzviertel, show the goblin with the red hair instead of the simple male.

District committee demands: Lehel should get Pumuckl traffic lights

“In the district committee, the idea came up to put a monument to Pumuckl,” says Wolfgang Püschel (SPD) at the request of the AZ. But it shouldn’t be a conventional monument. On the one hand, because there is already one in the Luitpoldpark: The bronze Pumuckl at the Pumucklbrunnen was donated by the creator Ellis Kaut herself, it has been there since 1985.

Püschel suspects that a second application for a monument would give him “competition from the city’s administrative point of view”. And that’s why it might be rejected.

On the other hand, the district committee wanted a smaller solution “that can also look smart,” says Püschel.

And that’s how he came up with the idea of the traffic light man, who also fit in very well with the character of the leprechaun, who keeps appearing and disappearing. The “invisible ghost and the visible rascal”, as Püschel describes him.

Pumuckl designer to develop traffic lights in Lehel

According to the BA application, the traffic lights at the intersections of Robert-Koch-Straße/Sternstraße, Liebigstraße/Triftstraße and Maximilianstraße/Widenmayerstraße/Steinsdorfstraße should be redesigned – with Pumuckln that go or stand.

These are to be developed in consultation with the graphic designer Barbara von Johnson. The Munich native is the first designer of the character and illustrated it for Ellis Kaut from 1963 to 1978.

It is of course no coincidence that the traffic lights are to be redesigned in Lehel and not elsewhere: in the backyard of Widenmayerstraße 2 was Meister Eder’s workshop, where the cinema film and series are shot from 1979.

The BA also selected the specific intersections to make the little ones happy: They are not only close to the film locations of the time, but also on the way to school for the children of the St. Anna elementary school in Lehel.

It is not yet clear whether and when the Pumuckl traffic lights will actually come. At its last meeting on May 25, the district committee decided to submit the application to the city.

But the signs are positive: Püschel has already felt and at least in his SPD faction there are people “who go along”.

Pumuckl fans in politics: Markus Söder and Dieter Reiter unveil commemorative plaque

Politicians have apparently discovered Pumuckl for themselves this year: It was only in April that Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) and Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) unveiled a commemorative plaque at Widenmayerstraße 2 in honor of the actor Gustl Bayrhammer, who died 30 years ago , who gave the master Eder.

Towards the end of the year, the new version of the TV series zum Pumuckl, directed by Marcus H. Rosenmüller, is to be broadcast on the RTL+ streaming service. A total of 13 episodes are planned.
