(CNN) – American singer and songwriter David Olney, whose music was played by Linda Ronstadt, Steve Young, Emmylou Harris and others, died of an apparent heart attack while performing on stage in Florida on Saturday, according to a statement on their website. He was 71 years old.
Olney paused in the middle of a song, said “I’m sorry” and “put her chin on her chest,” said singer and songwriter Scott Miller, who was performing alongside Olney at the 30A Composer Festival on Santa Beach Pink.
“He never dropped his guitar or fell off his stool,” Miller wrote on Facebook. “It was as simple and gentle as it was.”
Amy Rigby, who was also on stage with Olney, also wrote a powerful Facebook post.
“He was very still, sitting straight with the guitar on, with the most amazing hat and a beautiful rusty suede jacket… I just want the image to be as elegant and dignified as it was, because at first it seemed that it was only taking a moment “Rigby said, adding:” We’ve all lost someone important last night. “
“Pioneer of American music,” Olney produced more than 20 solo albums, according to his website. His second album included the song “Deeper Well,” which Emmylou Harris performed on his 1995 album Wrecking Ball. Others who performed their music were Del McCoury, Slaid Cleaves and The Wailin ‘Jennys, according to the website.
“David was loved and respected by everyone who knew him, including his fellow musicians and his crowd of fans,” Festival 30A producer Russell Carter said on Facebook.
Olney is survived by his wife, two children and “a devastated musical community,” according to the statement.
