The Swiss international Stephan Lichtsteiner is ending his career. The 36-year-old from Lucerne announced this at a media conference at the headquarters of the Swiss Football Association in Muri near Bern.
Lichtsteiner was most recently under contract with Bundesliga club Augsburg in the 2019/20 season. Previously, the 108-time Swiss international had been involved with the Grasshoppers (until 2005), Lille (2005 to 2008), Lazio Rome (2008 to 2001), Juventus Turin (2011 to 2018) and Arsenal (2018/19).
The right full-back played in four of the five top leagues in Europe. With Juventus Turin he was Italian champion seven times in a row. Lichtsteiner Palmarès has a total of 17 titles – 14 of them with Juventus.

Lichtsteiner completed 108 international matches for Switzerland. Only Heinz Hermann (118) and Alain Geiger (112) have made more appearances. Under national coaches Köbi Kuhn, Ottmar Hitzfeld and Vladimir Petkovic, he contested a total of five World Cup and European Championship finals – most recently in 2016 and 2018 as captain.
How next? “I want to go two ways”
“If you’re allowed to play more than 100 international matches for your country, that makes you proud. Every single game was an honor. And each one felt as if it had been the first in terms of nervousness », says Lichtsteiner.

“Every tournament was an incredible event. I always felt a tingling sensation. It was a shame that we narrowly missed the quarter-finals in the last three finals, which were held at a high level. ”

Lichtsteiner was denied a sixth final round due to the corona pandemic. The EM 2020 had to be postponed by a year. Lichtsteiner: “The plan would have been to resign after the EM in 2020. After UEFA decided to postpone the European Championship to 2021, I realized that the time had come and I didn’t want to add another year. “
Lichtsteiner does not yet know in detail what his future will look like. “I want to go two ways.” He is looking for challenges in the economic sector, says Lichtsteiner. But he also completes trainer courses and would like to obtain the relevant diplomas.
