Benson participates in a support group made up of young military women victims of rape. The psychiatrist who supervises them asks him to investigate a pregnant victim who has been missing for several days. Jessie, raped by a superior whom she did not dare to denounce, decided to give birth to her child and to desert. Jessie’s mutilated body is found in the trunk of her car: the killer stabbed her before making the baby disappear. Benson immediately suspects a Master Sergeant who had previously been reprimanded for having a relationship with Jessie. The inspector lets his own psychological problems guide and even slow down the investigation, all the more difficult as the army refuses to cooperate.
