Law most popular choice of study among students last year, sociology on the rise

Last academic year, law was the most popular choice of study among first-year students, with almost a thousand first-years more than in the previous academic year. Sociology and social studies rose the most of all studies, with an increase of 43 percent. This is apparent from the Keuzegids Universiteiten that will be presented today.

A total of 6403 new students enrolled in law, a growth of 17 percent. The strongest growth was seen at Utrecht University. 400 more students registered there than in the previous academic year. “The attention paid to the allowance affair and the discussion about the Dutch rule of law in times of crisis may have emphasized the importance of the profession,” say researchers who contributed to the guide.

They speculate that the limited orientation opportunities caused by the pandemic also led many students to choose law. According to the researchers, law has always been a study that attracts many people who are unsure which study to choose.

Social engagement

Thus, relative growth was strongest in sociology and social studies. Compared to the previous academic year, 438 students were added, a growth of 43 percent. According to researchers from the Keuzegids, this can be explained by the fact that the current generation (Generation Z) is “characterized by social engagement”.

The researchers write: “They grew up in a time when topics such as the climate crisis, the gender discussion and opportunity inequality predominated. In that light, it is not surprising that interest in this field of study has grown.”

The number of first-year students also increased relatively strongly in educational sciences, with a growth of 36 percent (494 students).

The Keuzegids Universiteiten is compiled by an independent editorial team, partly on the basis of a national survey among students. In addition, current data on admission requirements, the labor market, study success and quality of education are examined.
