There is no reason to relax in the fight against the corona pandemic, says Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach and calls on the federal states to implement the new Infection Protection Act. He also appealed to the Union to agree to a general obligation to vaccinate.

BHealth Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) sees only one way to end the pandemic: general vaccination, for which he urged the Bundestag on Thursday. Otherwise there would be a risk of corona restrictions and closures again in the fall, he warned. In view of the high number of infections, Lauterbach (SPD) called on the federal states to use opportunities for stronger corona containment. “There is no Freedom Day, there is no reason to relax here,” said the SPD politician in the Bundestag on Thursday. It is important to stand together in order to get through “this heavy wave of the pandemic”. The situation with 200 to 300 deaths per day and currently 300,000 new cases per day cannot be accepted.

Lauterbach appealed to the federal states to implement the new Infection Protection Act. One or the other would have wished that the federal government would make rules for all of Germany. However, this is not possible because the health system is not overloaded throughout Germany. However, there are numerous regions where hospitals are overloaded, planned interventions have to be canceled and patients have to be transferred. “The Infection Protection Act can and should be used there.”

Lauterbach also warned against a return to corona restrictions in autumn without the introduction of a general obligation to vaccinate. “Let’s end the pandemic this year. It’s in our hands (…). We should not let this opportunity slip by.”

Otherwise the debate about corona protection measures will start again in autumn: “Is the Infection Protection Act sufficient? (…) What do we have to close? Do the children have to wear masks?” said Lauterbach. “The only reliable way out of the pandemic is general vaccination.”

Lauterbach expressly appealed to the CDU and CSU to agree to a general obligation to vaccinate. He knows that they have many supporters there, he said. The Union faction’s own proposal for a vaccination law, which only later provides for a decision on a possible vaccination requirement, is not enough. “We can’t postpone it. If we start too late with compulsory vaccination, then we have only completed compulsory vaccination for next spring. That would be too late.”

For the first time in the corona pandemic, more than 300,000 new cases of infection were reported within one day – exactly 318,387 cases, as the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) announced on Thursday. The seven-day incidence rose to a peak of 1752.0 after 1734.2 reported new infections per 100,000 population in seven days the previous day. Another 300 deaths were registered within 24 hours.
