Latvian Prime Minister Conducts Working Visit to Ukraine,Pledges Continued Support

On Tuesday,July 15th,the Prime Minister of Latvia undertook a working visit to Ukraine at the invitation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

During her visit to Kyiv, the Prime Minister engaged in meetings wiht high-ranking Ukrainian officials. She also participated in a ceremony commemorating Ukraine’s statehood anniversary.

Reflecting on the statehood ceremony, the Prime Minister stated, “I was honored to be present at the ceremony to award the Heroes of Ukraine, where the families of the soldiers who fell defending the freedom of Ukraine were also honored. It was very painful to see a wife with a child in her arms receive the award won by her husband, because he fell due to Russian aggression, defending his family and country.” She further observed, “At this ceremony, I saw what it truly means to be Ukrainian and how heroically men, women, and young people defend their country both at the front and in the rear.”

In Kyiv, the Prime Minister also held discussions with US Special Envoy to Ukraine Keith Kellogg regarding ongoing support for Ukraine. “We also discussed the work on the latest US sanctions package. It is coordinated with the European Union and would be a very powerful blow not only to Russia, but also to the countries that support it,” the Prime Minister emphasized.

Furthermore, the Prime minister formally handed over Latvian-manufactured “Patria” armored personnel carriers to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. “Promised, done! Last year, during my visit to Kyiv, I promised that Latvia would deliver ‘Patria’ armored personnel carriers to Ukraine. Today,I am solemnly handing them over to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Latvia’s support for Ukraine is not just in words, but in real action. Ukraine’s security is also our security, the Ukrainians’ fight against the aggressor is also ours,” she stated, presenting 15 armored vehicles to the Ukrainian Armed Forces in kyiv.

Latvia’s military assistance to Ukraine for the current year encompasses 42 Patria armored personnel carriers, along with drones and other military equipment valued at a total of 70 million euros. Additionally, Latvia continues its commitment to training Ukrainian soldiers, with plans to train up to 4,000 this year. Latvia allocates 0.25% of its Gross domestic Product annually towards military support for Ukraine.

Concluding her remarks, the Prime Minister affirmed, “Our peoples are united by common values and understanding. This human connection makes our cooperation particularly strong. Latvia was, is and will be with Ukraine until a just and lasting peace is achieved.”
