Latvian films and projects start at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival / Article

The Karlovy Vary Festival is one of the most important events of the cinema life in Central and Eastern Europe, it obtained the A-class status already in 1956. About 200 films from all over the world are selected for the Karlovy Vary program every year, the audience buys more than 140,000 movie tickets, and the industry section is visited by about 1,300 influential film professionals every year.

The “Horizons” program, which selects “the most remarkable contemporary films”, this year includes director and artist Signe Baumanes’ new full-length animated film, which has already been recognized at festivals.My marriage project“.

This animated film for adults asks the eternal question – what is love, how to find and keep it? The film tells about the search for love of a young woman, Zelma, in which the mythical Sirens are involved – they teach her to strive for an ideal marriage, however, the ideas irretrievably collapse when Biology with its hormones and neuron signals affects the woman’s behavior and emotions, shaking the foundations of marriage. The film “My marriage project” is a co-production of Latvia, the USA and Luxembourg, made with the financial support of the National Cinema Center, the premiere in Latvia is expected at the end of this year.

In the selection of nine projects in the industry section “Works in Development” of the Karlovy Vary festival, director Armandas Začas’ upcoming debut feature film “All my friends will soon be dead”, the film’s producer is Alise Ģelze, who heads the film studio “White Picture” and was previously produced by Jāņa Norda, Renāra Feature films of Vimba and Jura Kursieš. The upcoming film by Armand Začas tells the story of a group of friends from the so-called “millennial generation” – it is not easy for them to become adults, the birth of a child and other natural life events seem to be a major challenge that changes the whole order so far. The development of the film project was financed by the National Cinema Center, the production of the film should begin in 2023.

Karlovy Vary festival this year, during the hostilities, sheltered the “Works in Progress” industry section of the Odessa International Film Festival (OIFF), which selected eight almost finished film projects, made in cooperation with Ukrainian cinematographers. This selection also includes the documentary film “Company of Steel” co-produced by the Latvian studio “VFS Films” (Latvian producer – Uldis Cekulis), the story of three Ukrainian soldiers – they have been fighting in eastern Ukraine since 2014, and now they have to return to the front again.
