It has already been reported that Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) received information on Thursday that two have been detained in Belarus Latvian citizens.

In connection with the situation in Belarus after the presidential elections on August 9, the ministry calls on Latvian citizens to be careful in public places where a large number of people congregate and to refrain from being on the streets in the evening.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reminds that in an emergency situation, it is necessary to immediately contact the Latvian Embassy in Belarus, the Latvian Consulate in Vitebsk or the 24-hour duty officer of the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by phone +371 26 337 711 or e-mail “[email protected]”.

According to official preliminary results Belarus the current head of state in the presidential election Alexander Lukashenko won 80.08% of the vote, while opposition candidate Svetlana Tikhanovska won 10.09%, but the opposition believes the election results were rigged.

Thousands have been injured or detained in Belarus by violently suppressing protests against blatant election irregularities and falsifying results. More than 250 victims are being treated in hospitals, and there are also deaths.
