Latvia Bolsters Defense with Swedish Archer Artillery Systems

New Procurement Signals Increased Regional Security Focus

Latvia is significantly upgrading its firepower with a planned purchase of 18 Archer 8×8 wheeled artillery systems from Sweden, marking a major step in strengthening its defense capabilities amid growing geopolitical tensions. The agreement paves the way for a formal intergovernmental accord.

Deal Details and Collaboration

The letter of intent was signed by Andis Dilāns, procurement deputy state secretary for the Latvian Ministry of Defence (MoD), and Göran Mårtensson, director of Swedish National Armaments. The deal prioritizes integrating Latvia’s local defense industry into the supply chain, ensuring long-term sustainability.

Beyond the initial procurement, the agreement outlines plans for a joint Archer 6×6 wheeled artillery unit, fostering closer military cooperation between the two nations. Combined training exercises for Latvian and Swedish personnel are also anticipated, pending approval from both armed forces.

Sweden will also provide Latvia with interim leased artillery systems to bridge the gap until the new Archer systems are delivered, ensuring uninterrupted firepower.

“The agreement between Sweden and Latvia marks a significant step in closer defence cooperation between the two countries. The agreement provides a solid basis for joint military exercises, soldier training, and the presence of effective artillery systems starting in 2026. This partnership demonstrates our shared commitment to strengthening regional security and deterrence, especially in these geopolitically challenging times.”

Expanding Latvian Military Modernization

This acquisition complements Latvia’s ongoing efforts to modernize its armed forces. In January 2025, the MoD contracted with General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) for 42 ASCOD infantry fighting vehicles, alongside logistical support. Furthermore, a research and development contract was awarded to Origin Robotics in March 2025 for a high-speed interceptor drone.

According to a recent report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), global military expenditure reached $2.44 trillion in 2023, a 6.8% increase in real terms from 2022, highlighting a worldwide trend towards increased defense spending. Archer System Capabilities and Global Interest

BAE Systems describes the Archer system as a low-risk, readily available solution for nations seeking to enhance their 155mm artillery capabilities. The system’s mobility and advanced features have garnered international attention.

Sweden itself recently procured 18 Archer mobile howitzers from BAE Systems in April 2025, as part of its ongoing support to Ukraine. The UK is also utilizing the Archer system to replace its AS90 artillery, which has been supplied to Ukraine.

Switzerland has also shortlisted Archer as a finalist in its artillery system evaluation process, demonstrating the platform’s global appeal. The Archer is mounted on an 8×8 RMMV HX2 truck chassis, providing exceptional mobility and firepower.
