Latvia has become one of the few countries in the world with a permit to export salmonid fish products to Australia

At the end of almost four years of harmonization work, Latvia has become the 11th country in the world whose companies can export salmonid fish products to Australia. The Food and Veterinary Office received this news this week from the Australian Government’s Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment.

Salmon products may only be exported to Australia by countries recognized by Australia that can demonstrate that the establishments, as well as the food chain monitoring system, comply with the requirements of Australian law. So far, only 10 countries around the world have succeeded – Canada, Denmark, Germany, Norway, the Philippines, Poland, Ireland, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The recognition process was started in 2018, when several Latvian companies expressed a wish to export salmon fishery products to Australia. This included audits not only of fishery products companies, but also of the Latvian FDA, which aimed to ensure that both the companies and the monitoring system complied with Australia’s high food safety standards and regulatory requirements.

The recognition process was initiated by all three Baltic States – Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, but Latvia is still the only one that has successfully concluded it and received a permit for the export of salmonid fish products to Australia.

In the future, Latvian producers of fishery products who are interested in exporting salmonid fish products to Australia should apply to the FVS, which will evaluate the company in accordance with the requirements set by Australia. After receiving a positive opinion, the company will have the opportunity to start exporting salmonids.

It should be noted that only salmon products from raw materials produced in seven countries around the world – Australia itself, Canada, Denmark, Norway, Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States – can be exported to Australia.

In total, health certificates for the export of food of animal origin are currently harmonized with more than 50 different third countries and associations of countries. Product groups and countries can be found here.
