«Late night» – Full viewer flight – see the numbers

After 20 years, “Senkveld” is over, TV 2 announced on Monday. The latest program will be broadcast on Friday 21 May. Only six broadcasts remain, the channel informs.

TV 2 justifies «Late night»the wreckage that they have to renew themselves. Program editor Kathrine Haldorsen tells Dagbladet that they will therefore not continue with the talk show format.

– The renewal means that we focus on four content categories where the talk show category is not among these. It’s hard to get talk shows to flow. The renewal in TV 2 is to get people over to Sumo. The programs that are not streamed at all will be difficult to get on the air, she says.

Full seerflukt

Dagbladet has asked TV 2 for the viewership figures for the “Late Night” concept from 2003 until this spring. The channel’s press manager, Jan-Petter Dahl, says that TV 2 “does not have complete figures for all seasons”, but broadcasts a spring and autumn overview from and including the autumn of 2015 to and including the spring of 2021.

The figures that TV 2 has shared with Dagbladet show the flight of viewers that has affected the concept in recent years:

From the autumn of 2015 to the spring of 2021, “Senkveld” has lost more than half, 53 percent, of viewers.

  • Autumn 2015: 769,000
  • Spring 2016: 602,000
  • Autumn 2016: 533,000
  • Spring 2017: 616,000
  • Autumn 2017: 552,000
  • Spring 2018: 547,000

Throws the cards in the air

Marianne Massaiu, TV manager at the media agency Mediacom, is not surprised by the news that the program is being taken off the air.

– I do not want to say that 300,000-400,000 viewers in 2021 are poor viewership, but yes, they have gone down. For “Senkveld”‘s part, all the time Stian Blipp has decided to quit, a change of program manager still had to be carried out. Should TV 2 then start the search for a new profile, or do something completely new, the expert asks.

– It seems that they throw the cards in the air and see if they find new concepts that have the right to life. I would think that TV 2 focuses a lot on just the popular program surface in the future. It is attractive to advertisers. They also prove that they can challenge NRK with new and good concepts, such as “Kompani Lauritzen”. It will be exciting to see what they fill the vacancy with, she continues.

Sends greetings

The TV profiles Harald Rønneberg and Thomas Numme led “Senkveld” from 2003 to 2018, and have enjoyed great success with the concept. To Dagbladet, they send a word button and collect greetings to the heirs Helene Olafsen and Stian Blipp and the rest of the “Senkveld” editorial staff.

– Of course it’s a sad day for us who love talk shows – but Helene and Stian have done a brilliant job the last three years. Now we wish them and the entire editorial staff good luck – and then they must enjoy the last few weeks. And then we look forward to seeing them on screen again later, they write.

Blipp exit affected

In February, it was announced that host Stian Blipp (30) should end. At that time, it was not known what would happen to “Senkveld” next. Blipp believe the election has helped speed up the process about shutting down the program.

– I do not think that it is the direct reason, but that it was an influencing factor and something that accelerated that process. Although it is not nice to have that role, he tells Dagbladet.

– We found out between nine and half past nine this morning. It comes as a surprise, but still it was a potential outcome that we in the back of our heads were both a little afraid of and expected, says Blipp.

– Do you think it goes that way?

– I did not think it would go that way, but when I think back on the decision to quit, it was one of many my waking nights that this could happen, he admits.

Dagbladet has tried Olafsen for a comment, but has not succeeded.
