Last Dutchman ‘corona cruise’ Japan home: ‘At least six times tested before departure’

In recent weeks, RTL Nieuws has had intensive contact with the 71-year-old Dutchman, who wants to remain anonymous. He kept us informed from the ship. Now the adventure in Japan is over for him too. “I am looking forward to going back to anonymity,” he says on the phone.

Before they could fly back to Europe, the passengers received test after test, “certainly about six times.” On board the Diamond Princess, when you disembark and before the plane left.

What followed was a twelve-hour flight. There were also Italian doctors on board, who flew to Japan to pick up the passengers. They were kept separate from the passengers by a plastic sheet (see photo at the top of the article).

“Too bad to go to sleep”

“It was almost a shame to go to sleep. This was so unique, we will never experience this again,” says the man. “We were 33 passengers and about 25 people who helped us.”

The passengers landed in Berlin at 2 AM last night. The man is now on his way to his partner’s house in Germany. There they go together for two weeks in quarantine. He does not worry: “I don’t feel like I have the virus, but I don’t want to run any risk.”

That the Dutchman and his German partner could come along was regulated by the embassies of our country and Germany. The 71-year-old man is very pleased with the help they received.

“I had regular contact with them. First with employees, but eventually I also got the ambassador on the phone. They were very interested.” Help also came: when they told the embassy that there was no water, that was arranged a few hours later.

The man and his partner will be monitored by the German health services for the next two weeks.
