Largest Alcohol Molecule in Space Identified, Here’s the Location!

The largest alcohol molecule in space is the latest discovery by researchers. It is possible that the alcohol is in the form of propanyl beyond Earth.

So far, alcohol molecules have been found in space. However, the alcohol is only in the form of microscopic molecules.

Now researchers think they have found the largest alcohol molecule in space.

The Largest Alcohol Molecule in Space

Outer space is a very interesting place to be the object of research. Since the first many scientists and researchers who want to uncover the contents beyond the Earth.

In outer space itself there are various kinds of molecules, some of which are on Earth as well. One of the molecules is alcohol.

So far, alcohol in space has mostly been in the form of microscopic molecules. However, now researchers have just discovered an unusual alcohol molecule in space.

They have just discovered a molecule of this type with the largest size ever identified in outer space.

The alcohol molecule is present in the form of propanol which has two forms or isomers. The two forms of propanol have been identified through observation, namely norm propanol and isopropanol.

Normal propanol was detected in the star formation region for the first time. Meanwhile, isopropanol, which is also the main ingredient in hand sanitizer, has never been seen in interstellar form before.

Launching from Sciencealert, the discovery of this alcohol molecule should be able to explain how celestial bodies such as stars and comets are formed.

“The detection of the two propanol isomers is strong enough to determine the mechanism of formation of each object,” said one of the astronomers named Rob Garrod from the University of Virginia.

According to him, the two molecules also have physical and behavioral similarities, which means they must be in the same place and time.

So far the only question is the exact number of them. That would make the interstellar ratio of the two molecules much more precise than would be the case for the other pair of molecules.

Found in Star’s ‘Delivery Room’

The researchers found the largest alcohol molecule in space, in what is also a giant star-forming giant named Sagittarius B2 or Sgr B2.

This region is located near the center of the Milky Way as well as Sagittarius A* which is the supermassive black hole where our galaxy formed.

Apart from Sagittarius B2, this region is also known as the ‘stellar delivery room’, because it often produces giant stars.

The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile since 10 years ago has greatly helped astronomers to carry out molecular analyzes in space. So it can identify molecules that have never been seen before.

Scientists’ work after discovering the largest alcohol molecule in space continues with the mission of finding even more interstellar molecules in Sagittarius B2. The goal is to understand the type of chemical fusion that occurs in star formation. (R10/HR-Online)
