It is not known how the fire on the Veendijk started. The farmhouse has a thatched roof. Large flames are visible from under the roof. Part of the first floor has already been lost.

Fire brigades from Hoogeveen, De Wijk, Ruinen and Meppel are trying to extinguish the blaze with all their might. A lot of smoke is released during the fire.

Fortunately, there was no asbestos in the farm, says spokesman for the Drenthe Safety Region Marc Meijs. “The flames in the front house have now been almost extinguished. The part where there is a lot of reeds, there is still a hefty fire. It’s really quite a job to get it under control. I can’t say how long that will take. The reed is dry and highly flammable. Sufficient water is available for extinguishing.

The residents of the farm were not at home when the fire broke out. According to bystanders, they are on vacation.
