Laois, Ireland, Contends for prestigious European Green Tourism Award
Portlaoise, Ireland – Laois County is making a strong bid for recognition as a leader in enduring tourism, having been shortlisted for the 2026 European Commission’s European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism Award. The announcement positions Laois amongst a select group of European destinations demonstrating a commitment to environmentally responsible travel and innovative tourism practices.
Laois joins Dubrovnik (Croatia), Geestland (Germany), Ibiza (Spain), Mariagerfjord (Denmark), Marmaris (Turkey), Rebild (Denmark), and Tartu (Estonia) on the shortlist, selected from an initial pool of 26 applicants representing 18 countries.
A delegation from laois county Council will travel to Brussels in November to present their case to the European Commission, representing both Laois and Ireland in the competition. The winning destination will be lauded as a “pioneer of sustainable tourism” and recognized for its dedication to the goals outlined in the European Green deal.regina Dunne, Just Transition Regenerative Tourism Activator in Laois, highlighted the collaborative effort driving the county’s success. “This recognition shines a light on the inspiring work happening across Laois, where businesses, community groups, volunteers, and local authority departments have come together to deliver tangible climate action and regenerative tourism initiatives,” she stated.
Dunne pointed to several key projects showcasing Laois’s commitment, including Portlaoise’s advancements in low-carbon town planning and transportation, ongoing regeneration projects in towns and villages throughout the county, the vital restoration work at Abbeyleix Bog, and the “Portlaoise – Town in a Garden” initiative.
The European Commission emphasized that the ultimate award will be given to the destination demonstrating “an exceptional commitment to shaping the future of sustainable and innovative tourism in Europe.” The outcome of the competition is eagerly anticipated, with Laois poised to showcase its dedication to a greener future for tourism.
