Krefeld / Mönchengladbach / Neuss. For more intelligent and integrated mobility for freight transport and logistics

The Ministry of Transport announced: The IHK Mittlerer Niederrhein would like to investigate in more detail how delivery and goods traffic in city centers can become more sustainable and cleaner and still everyone gets their delivery on time. The study “Development of micro-depots in smaller cities using the example of the municipalities of Krefeld, Mönchengladbach and Neuss” will be continued and the concrete implementation will now be worked out. The project is supported by the state.

Transport Minister Hendrik Wüst presented Jürgen Steinmetz, the chief executive of the IHK Mittlerer Niederrhein, with a funding decision of 159,300 euros.

“Less delivery traffic in the city means more quality of life in our inner cities. For this we need intelligent logistics solutions. The study can be a blueprint for many municipalities and cooperation partners on how the movement of goods on the last mile can be improved. That is why we support this good idea, ”said Transport Minister Hendrik Wüst.

Micro-depots are intermediate stations for goods and services so that fewer large delivery vehicles have to drive into city centers. Smaller vehicles can then take over the delivery and thus make traffic more sustainable. The second part of the IHK study aims to find out exactly how the locations of micro-depots must be designed and which operator model is suitable. Jürgen Steinmetz, General Manager of the IHK Mittlerer Niederrhein: “We are very happy about the follow-up funding for our project ‘Feasibility of micro-depots in small and medium-sized cities’. With our first study, we were able to show what promising opportunities there are also for medium-sized cities to make delivery traffic more environmentally friendly and to reduce congestion and pollution. Now it is a matter of putting the theoretical results into practice together with our partners in Neuss, Mönchengladbach and Krefeld. In the future, other municipalities can also use these concepts to improve the situation in their inner cities. “

With the guideline for the promotion of networked mobility & mobility management (FöRi-MM), districts, cities and municipalities can apply for state funding for:

  • Mobility concepts and studies
  • Measures to digitize the transport system
  • Mobile stations and other infrastructures
  • Mobility management measures

The funding rate is up to 80 percent. Pure public transport, construction of roads and cycle paths and purely urban planning measures are not eligible for funding. Project applications can be submitted to the responsible district governments. The regional coordination offices at the NRW mobility network also answer questions.
