Laila Pakalniņa’s film “In the Mirror” will have its world premiere at the Tallinn Film Festival “Black Nights” / Article / LSM.lv

The largest Class A festival in Northern Europe “Black Nights / PÖFF“Has announced the first eight films of the competition, and Latvian director Laila Pakalniņa’s latest feature film” Mirror “, which is included in this selection and will have its world premiere, informed the representatives of the National Film Center. The Tallinn Film Festival, which will take place for the 24th time this year, plans to adapt the process to the current epidemiological situation, however, the film premieres hope to be held in person. –

The Black Nights Festival will take place from November 13 to 29.

Commenting on the selected program, the director of the festival Tīna Loka admits that this year has been special: “This year with its ups and downs will definitely be recorded in the memory of us all. We also felt the impression of a global pandemic, when during the quarantine for more than a month the work of the festival stopped altogether. And what was even more pleasant was our surprise when, after the summer solstice, we started receiving film applications from the authors again. This year’s competition program will be remembered with the most difficult selection process, because we received a lot of really good applications, it was extremely unfortunate to give up a number of amazing films. Personally, I am really excited about this year’s program, which could be described as a proof of author’s cinema, so this program is likely to provoke discussion and diversity of opinion, but it is actually a task for good cinema.

It is gratifying that there are personalities among the participants who can already be called “friends of the festival”, and their company will be perfectly complemented by new talents. “

Tallinn Film Festival “Black Nights” has previously announced the format of this year’s event, which will be adapted to the current situation, but there will also be live events, including film premieres. Therefore, the festival has acquired two new partners – private laboratories from Estonia that are committed to providing face masks and Covid-19 testing.

The world-famous Latvian director Laila Pakalniņa is also one of the “permanent authors of the festival” mentioned by Tīna Loka. The feature film “In the Mirror” is an adventurous experiment with the classic Snow White motif, moreover, the visuality of the film also surprises with its modernity – cameraman Gints Bērziņš has shot the whole film as a chain of selfies of its characters.
