Lack of nursing staff in intensive care at the LaSalle hospital

The daily The Press reports that for eight months, the nurses in this sector have not been able to take a break or take the time to eat, due to a lack of relief.

For nurses, it’s a big source of stress, says Kristina Hoare, of the Fédération interprofessionnelle de la santé du Québec. They are tired, they are not allowed to go out for fresh air, to see the sun, to eat. […] They are just two, sometimes three nurses when there are supposed to be four, minimally, in intensive care.

According to the CIUSSS, this situation mainly affects the evening and night shifts.

When nurses cannot leave the unit to take their breaks because we do not have the nursing staff to replace them, they are paid time and a halfspecifies Sabrina Gariepy, senior adviser to the protocol and public relations of the organization.

The action plan of this CIUSSS notably plans to call upon volunteers in the other sectors of the LaSalle hospital and to encourage the return to work of nurses retired from intensive care.

always according to The Pressthe hospital’s intensive care nurses filed a complaint with the CNESST last November regarding this lack of staff.
