Can you tell us a bit about the anti-drug operation in Laâyoune and its ramifications at the international level?
The prefecture service of the judicial police of Laâyoune proceeded on Saturday, in coordination with the elements of the Royal Gendarmerie and on the basis of precise information provided by the services of the Directorate General of National Security (DGSN) and the Directorate General of surveillance of the territory (DGST), with the arrest of fourteen individuals, including a Mauritanian and a Senegalese, suspected of links with a criminal network active in the international drug and psychotropic trafficking.
The searches and searches carried out in a Saharan area about 30 km from Laâyoune, in the direction of Smara, led to the seizure of a Kalashnikov, 66 bullets, a hunting rifle and 114 cartridges, in addition to 216 drug platelets. a total weight of around 5.89 tonnes of chira.
The search and raking operations also led to the discovery of suspects of various calibers, a tear gas canister, a pair of binoculars, two satellite telephones, a geolocation device, a false license plate and three 4×4 vehicles, in addition to sums of money in national and international currency suspected of coming from international drug trafficking.
This operation is part of the global security strategy with a proactive dimension adopted by the Directorate General for National Security (DGSN) and the Directorate General for Territorial Surveillance (DGST) with a view to monitoring and combating transnational organized crime , in particular that linked to the international traffic in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. These include blocking the way for these criminal networks which have international ramifications and which operate simultaneously in the field of illegal immigration and human trafficking.

The security services in the southern provinces of the Kingdom have been able, in recent months, to dismantle several criminal networks. How do you assess the results of these operations?
The security services of the Laayoune police prefecture have succeeded, through a series of qualifying operations, in dismantling several criminal networks active in the international traffic in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.
In the past few months, 33 cases have been registered within the territorial jurisdiction of the prefecture which extends from Sidi Ifni to El Guergarate and 111 suspects have been arrested, in addition to the seizure of approximately 45.44 tonnes of chira.
In addition, there are 4 Kalashnikovs, 139 bullets, 9 shotguns and 250 cartridges, 33 cars, two trucks, 7 motorcycles, 18 inflatable boats and 15 marine engines, in addition to an amount estimated at 428,293 dirhams.

What are the pillars of the DGSN strategy in the field of combating organized and cross-border crime?
The Laâyoune operation is similar to a series of operations carried out by the security services in the cities of Tangier, Oujda, Nador, Fez, Agadir, Casablanca, as well as in other cities and regions of the Kingdom.
This type of qualitative operation is the result of the efforts deployed by the DGSN in order to combat all forms of organized crime, the international traffic in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, as well as the ramifications of these criminal networks.
The primordial and effective role played by the central services of the DGSN should be underlined in terms of support and orientation of the action carried out by the various decentralized services, in permanent and continuous coordination with the services of the DGST. The objective is to further strengthen the fight against international criminal phenomena, in particular the international traffic in drugs and psychotropic substances and illegal immigration.
