The prefectural service of the judicial police of Laâyoune proceeded, on Saturday, in coordination with the elements of the Royal Gendarmerie and on the basis of precise information provided by the services of the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST), to the ‘arrest of fourteen individuals, including a Mauritanian and a Senegalese, suspected of links with a criminal network active in the international drug and psychotropic trafficking and possession of firearms.
The searches and searches carried out in a Saharan area about 30 km from Laâyoune, in the direction of Smara, led to the seizure of a Kalashnikov, 66 bullets, a hunting rifle and 114 cartridges, in addition to 216 platelets of drugs a total weight of about 5.8 tonnes of chira, says a press release from the Directorate General of National Security (DGSN).
The search and raking operations also made it possible to discover in the suspects stabs of various calibers, a tear gas canister, a pair of binoculars, two satellite telephones, a geolocation device, a false license plate and three 4 × 4 vehicles, in addition to sums of money in national and international currency suspected of coming from international drug trafficking, adds the same source.
The suspects were subjected to a preliminary investigation under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office in order to elucidate the ins and outs of this criminal case and to determine the level of involvement of each of them as well as the possible ramifications of this network. criminal at national and regional levels, specifies the DGSN.
