Jorge Gutiérrez Assembles All-Star Team for Adult Animated Feature ‘La Venganza Rodríguez’
Animator Jorge Gutiérrez, known for El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera and Maya and the Three, is developing a new adult animated feature, La Venganza Rodríguez, described as a “hilariously crazy and violent love letter” to Tijuana, 1980s Mexploitation cinema, Lucha Libre, and modern art. The project marks Gutiérrez’s return to autonomous filmmaking after working within the U.S. studio system and represents one of his most mature creative endeavors to date.
La Venganza Rodríguez recently secured up to €150,000 in development funding through Ibermedia Next, a program recognizing innovative and aspiring storytelling. Gutiérrez is currently finalizing a trailer to pitch to potential partners for full feature production. The film’s development signals a growing space for adult animation with culturally specific narratives and unique visual styles.
Gutiérrez is collaborating with a team of accomplished artists and writers, including his wife and frequent screenwriter Sandra Equihua; Emmy-winner Almu Redondo (Star Wars: Visions); Pakoto Martinez (The Book of Life, Maya and the Three); Gustavo Cosío (Son of Jaguar, Maya and the Three); the artistic duo Awesombrosos (Sebastián and Diego Ramirez); Esteban Pedrozo (Ultraman: Rising); Marta Ruiperez; and Myra Lopez (We the people, Maya and the Three).
Gutiérrez stated the film is inspired by “Picasso, Basquiat, and fighting video games.” Visual development work, led by Pakoto Martinez, showcases a vibrant and dynamic aesthetic. The project’s next phase involves securing funding and partnerships to bring the full vision to life.
