sport">Kyrgios made a somewhat timid impression on the Center Court, two days after his sensational win over Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas. He hit no fewer than 79 winners and 35 aces.

Need a glass of wine

sport">“It wasn’t my best level, but I fought my way through it,” Kyrgios said. “I’ve played a lot in recent weeks, but I managed it again in five sets. I definitely need a glass of wine tonight.”

sport">The 27-year-old Kyrgios will face Chilean Cristian Garin in the quarterfinals, who was the boss in a grueling five-setter Alex de Minaur from Australia. It was 2-6 5-7 7-6 (3) 6-4 7-6 (6) for Garin, who lost in the fourth round in London last year. He survived two game points, at 5-4 in the fifth set.

Koolhof eliminated in doubles after five-setter

sport">Wesley Koolhof has been eliminated in the third round of the doubles at Wimbledon. Together with his British partner Neal Skupski, he lost 7-5 6-4 3-6 4-6 7-5 to Australians Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell. The game lasted 3 hours and 48 minutes.

sport">Koolhof and Skupski were placed third in London. They are the best performing couple of 2022 and have already won five titles this year.

sport">“We have definitely come here as one of the favourites, as we are the team to beat as we lead the annual rankings. But grass is something else again, just like matches for best-of-five sets,” said Koolhof, who was able to quickly put the disappointment in place. “The elimination would hurt more if we were playing for points, I must admit. We didn’t start well, but we came back well in the third and fourth set. We were also better in the fifth set, but they had one chance and they took it.”

sport">The 33-year-old Koolhof, the number 7 in the world, was the only Dutchman who was still active in the doubles at Wimbledon. He will only be back in action in two weeks, at the clay tournament in Hamburg.

sport">Koolhof was asked by Botic van de Zandschulp to take a seat in his box, but the best double player in the Netherlands declined that offer. “I still have some things to do here and we want to close this week with our team. Unfortunately, I had to decline his invitation.” Van de Zandschulp will face Rafael Nadal in the fourth round of the singles.
