HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Mississippi State kicker Kyle Ferrie etched his name into the Bulldog record books Saturday, booting a 55-yard field goal – the longest in program history – during MSU’s 34-17 season-opening win over Southern Miss. The kick⁤ surpassed⁣ Artie Cosby’s 54-yarder set in 1985, a record that stood for four decades.

Ferrie, a junior,⁢ connected on‌ the record-breaking attempt ‍late in the first quarter, extending Mississippi State’s early lead. He finished the⁢ game a ⁤perfect 2-for-2 on field goal attempts, adding a 30-yarder, adn converting all four of his extra-point tries.

Head coach Jeff Lebby highlighted Ferrie’s consistency leading up to the game. “he’s been really, really consistent so I’m ⁢excited about him,” Lebby said earlier this week. “He did a really good job in‌ camp and had a great spring as well. He’s taken ⁢that next step and the kid has⁤ got a bunch of pop, got a big leg and been really consistent. So, I’m looking ‌forward to him being able to step out⁣ there and have a big impact.”

Saturday’s performance validated Lebby’s assessment. “Was excited to see [Ferrie] go do exactly what he’s done in practice,” Lebby commented after the game. “That was good. That can be a weapon for ‌us. He’s going to be big for us.”

Since⁣ arriving ‌at Mississippi State ⁢as a freshman in 2023, Ferrie has demonstrated a strong leg, earning a pair of ‌Southeastern Conference Freshman⁤ of‍ the Week awards. He has converted 28 of 36 career field goal attempts and boasts a streak of 32 consecutive made extra points, bringing his career PAT success rate to 69-for-70.
