HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Mississippi State kicker Kyle Ferrie etched his name into the Bulldog record books Saturday, booting a 55-yard field goal – the longest in program history – during MSU’s 34-17 season-opening win over Southern Miss. The kick surpassed Artie Cosby’s 54-yarder set in 1985, a record that stood for four decades.
Ferrie, a junior, connected on the record-breaking attempt late in the first quarter, extending Mississippi State’s early lead. He finished the game a perfect 2-for-2 on field goal attempts, adding a 30-yarder, adn converting all four of his extra-point tries.
Head coach Jeff Lebby highlighted Ferrie’s consistency leading up to the game. “he’s been really, really consistent so I’m excited about him,” Lebby said earlier this week. “He did a really good job in camp and had a great spring as well. He’s taken that next step and the kid has got a bunch of pop, got a big leg and been really consistent. So, I’m looking forward to him being able to step out there and have a big impact.”
Saturday’s performance validated Lebby’s assessment. “Was excited to see [Ferrie] go do exactly what he’s done in practice,” Lebby commented after the game. “That was good. That can be a weapon for us. He’s going to be big for us.”
Since arriving at Mississippi State as a freshman in 2023, Ferrie has demonstrated a strong leg, earning a pair of Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week awards. He has converted 28 of 36 career field goal attempts and boasts a streak of 32 consecutive made extra points, bringing his career PAT success rate to 69-for-70.
