Kyle Edmund will be out for several months after knee surgery

Kyle Edmund started having problems with his left knee in 2018

Former British number one Kyle Edmund is at risk of missing several months of the season after undergoing left knee surgery.

Edmund, who hasn’t played for six months, underwent a “little procedure” in Switzerland at the end of March.

It was performed by Dr Roland Biedert, who operated on Roger Federer, Stan Wawrinka and Juan Martin del Potro.

Edmund’s problems began in October 2018, when a scan revealed fluid behind his left knee.

The 26-year-old had reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open in January and had just won the European Open to climb to his career high of 14.

But despite winning a second ATP title in New York in February of last year, Edmund’s progress since then has been steadily hampered.

He is currently ranked 69th in the world and has not played since his loss in the first qualifying round in Vienna last October.

Edmund had resisted the surgery, due to the obvious risks to a professional athlete, but persistent knee pain has increased since the start of the year and prevented him from practicing.

Now a long period of rehabilitation is underway and an appearance at Wimbledon looks like a hopeless hope.
