Kurds fighting for autonomy declare ceasefire in Turkey

The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has decided not to take military action against the Turkish army during the aftermath of earthquakes in the southeast of the country. This was announced by the head of the political wing of the PKK, Jamil Bayik.

“We call on all our forces that are fighting: stop the hostilities in Turkey, in megacities and cities. We have decided not to take any action until the Turkish state opposes us and attacks us,” said Jamil Bayik (quoted from ANF). He stressed that the position of the Turkish authorities on this issue will be decisive.

The PKK is fighting for the rights of Kurds in Turkey and the creation of Kurdish autonomy. The PKK was formed in 1978. The organization is recognized as a terrorist organization in Turkey, the United States and the European Union.
