The league of Arab States has declared an immediate and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip as its highest priority, emphasizing that such a cessation of hostilities is crucial for initiating early recovery and reconstruction efforts in the devastated region. This declaration comes as the international community grapples with the ongoing humanitarian crisis and seeks pathways toward lasting peace.

Ambassador Hossam Zaki, Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League, conveyed this urgent message during a meeting with Reem Radovan, Germany’s Minister of Economic Cooperation and Development, who is currently in Cairo. The discussions focused on the critical humanitarian and political developments unfolding in Gaza.

Ambassador Zaki underscored that halting the violence is the foundational step towards ensuring peace and stability in Gaza. He highlighted that this would create the necessary conditions for implementing recovery projects and bolstering international reconstruction initiatives in the wake of widespread destruction.

During their exchange, Ambassador Zaki referenced the comprehensive Gaza reconstruction plan endorsed by Arab leaders at an emergency summit earlier in March. This plan outlines a multi-stage approach, beginning with immediate relief and early recovery, and culminating in full-scale reconstruction. A key tenet of this plan is the imperative for the Palestinian people to remain on their land, actively preventing any attempts at displacement.

The meeting also addressed preparations for a pivotal two-state solution conference scheduled to take place in New York City at the end of July. Ambassador Zaki stressed the significance of convening this conference at this particular juncture,acknowledging the challenging circumstances the Palestinian issue has faced as October 2023. he noted the Arab League General Secretariat’s active involvement in the conference’s proceedings, including leading crucial working groups in collaboration with the European Union.

Minister Radovan affirmed Germany’s commitment to supporting efforts aimed at achieving peace and security in Gaza.She expressed her country’s backing for the Arab reconstruction plan and reiterated Germany’s dedication to cooperating with regional and international partners to ensure aid is delivered effectively and equitably.
