The series looks at the legal and illegal wood business in Bolivia, including the experience and career of one of Latvia’s best-known drug smugglers, Roland Prīvert, in the center of the story.
The new series “Bolivia. In the Footsteps of a Tree ”reflects the experience of the scandalous drug courier Roland Prīvert in the wood industry, however, in addition, the documentary series reflects various behind-the-scenes business. Although the main focus is on cocaine production and trafficking, the series shows that the substance itself is only one of the end products of the tree plant. All other products are not as black as the first, true, not so famous.
“Everything in life is not just white or black – it is the main thing we want to show the audience with the documentary series. There are different people and different life experiences. Exploring the boundaries of good and evil is our duty as documentaries, and that is exactly what we did at the time of writing. However, it is impossible to understand evil without entering this territory to show that we are each responsible for our own actions and their consequences, ”says Sandijs Semjonovs, the creator of the documentary series.
He adds that one of the most striking findings of the filming team at the time of the series was the fact that cocaine is a way of life for part of the community, and that such people are seen at different levels of society. Interestingly, now, during the Covid-19 pandemic, cocaine use has increased, as the series team learned during the series.

“We chose to go to Bolivia because it is one of the three main cocaine-producing countries, and Rolands Prīverts has settled here. The cocaine industry is illegal and highly closed. To see part of it, Preverts was our guide. We do not want to glorify him, but nowadays nothing can be hidden. It is better to talk and explain the consequences of cocaine and its use, ”says Jānis Krīvēns, the director of the documentary series.
According to Ivars Lubāns, Marketing Manager of “Go3”, one of the goals of the next generation of television is to create quality local content that is not only entertaining, but also educational. In addition, at a time when the pandemic has partially halted the film industry, but the demand for content has grown, local production is particularly important.
“By creating its original content, Go3 has previously offered the public a variety of scandalous, hitherto undiscussed topics that have proven their popularity among viewers. Continuing the theme of the drug business started in the spring with the series “Don’t be afraid of anything” created by Andrejs Ēķis, we decided to create the first “Go3” original series in the documentary genre. Combining the skills of well-known journalist and producer Sandijs Semjonovs in the documentary field and the attractiveness of musician and content creator Jānis Krīvēns, the series will make the series attractive to all generations, revealing much new behind the scenes of the industry, ”continues Lubāns.

There are many stereotypes, prejudices and myths associated with South America, but some of them will be dispelled by the documentary series. The public will be able to learn about the cultivation of a completely legal tree business in the country, behind the scenes of illegal business, the position of the tree growers themselves about the politics and criminal organizations that exploit them, the movement of money in the industry and other aspects that are interesting for research. At the same time, viewers of the series will have the opportunity to appreciate the special and untouched nature of Bolivia. This country is characterized by a glorious biodiversity – from the Andes Mountains in the west of the country, which also houses the famous Ijuni Salt Lake, to the Amazon rainforests in the east of the country.
In general, filming the series took a month. The series features the well-known Latvian musician and content creator Jānis Krīvēns, who helps to reflect Roland Prīvert’s private life, as well as provide an insight into the industry as a whole.
The series will be shown on the next generation television “Go3” from June 4.
