In the Royal Chambers, which refer to the appearance of the residence from the 16th and early 17th centuries, you can see the famous collection of tapestries of King Sigismund Augustus, royal portraits and Italian Renaissance furniture.
For the first time, you will be able to take a closer look at the legendary Wawel heads placed in the coffered ceiling thanks to the mirror set up in the MP room. Visitors will enter the Dutch study for the first time, where a collection of 49 paintings is presented, mainly of the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as the Collector’s office arranged on the model of art and curiosities popular in the 17th century, where not only paintings, sculptures, graphics were collected, but also creations of nature, incl. semi-precious stones or shells.
In the rooms on the second floor of the castle will appear three paintings not yet shown on the permanent exhibition: “Adoration of the Child” painted on poplar wood and two paintings presented in the hall Pod Ptakami: a portrait of King Władysław IV purchased in 2013 in Italy and “The surrender of the Moscow army in the year 1634 “bought at auction in 2013 in Germany, and depicting one of the key episodes of the war between the Commonwealth and the Grand Duchy of Moscow.
New acquisition in the chambers
– The chambers are an attraction. It is worth remembering what the tapestries from the collection of Zygmunt August look like. But for our guests from 30 June we will have one more surprise. In the great hall we will show you one of our last acquisitions: a beret pin from the mid-sixteenth century, which in the future will go to the treasury – said the director of the Wawel Royal Castle Andrzej Betlej.
The gem originally served as an ornament for men’s clothing. After changing fashion trends, it was transformed into a decorative element hooked on a chain and stored in art and curiosities. At that time, the Wawel acquisition received a jewelry setting with a hanging ring. – In the registers of the Crown Treasury, the pin is mentioned with this motif exactly: with Tarkwiniusz and Lucretia. That was the reason why we decided to buy it – Betlej added.
The Saturday opening of the Representative Royal Chambers will be accompanied by 18 concert of violinist Stanisław Słowiński broadcast live from the Arcaded Courtyard on the castle’s Facebook profile. A new one will be a room for a guardian with children next to the “Under Planet” room in Wawel.
Visitor Royal Castle they must comply with safety rules: follow designated communication routes, keep a distance of two meters and follow the operating instructions. Hand disinfectant will be available at the entrance, and checkout and reception desks have been secured with transparent partitions, and their employees have masks and disinfectants. From 13 to 13.30 a sanitary break is scheduled. The limit of people who are simultaneously at the exhibition site is 197.
