‘Korea’s Pioneer Self-Driving Cargo Transport from Incheon to Busan’

Starting this month, for the first time in Korea, self-driving cargo trucks will begin providing paid transport services across local governments.

Originally, autonomous driving paid transportation could only be operated within one local government, but the government applied a special regulation this time.

Reporter Yoon Hae-ri covered the story.

It looks like a standard cargo truck, but if you look closely, there are cameras all over the vehicle.

When the software is run, artificial intelligence controls the vehicle by itself, driving at a level 3 level of self-driving that allows the driver to completely take their hands off the steering wheel.

These 14 self-driving cargo trucks are scheduled to be sequentially put into cargo transportation on the main road connecting the metropolitan area and the Yeongnam area starting this month.

Under the current law, the paid transportation service for self-driving cargo can only be provided in pilot operation districts within specific local governments with the permission of mayors and governors.

However, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy introduced a regulatory sandbox at the end of last year to allow the actual transportation business to start with autonomous driving.

It was possible to freely travel over 600km round trip from Incheon to Busan, but instead, autonomous driving was allowed only on highways.

Long-distance driving seems to be effective in reducing the fatigue of daily cargo owners.

With seven cameras, a computer with machine learning software, and a little more modification, even a regular truck can have autonomous driving capabilities at a cost of 10 million won, but there are obstacles to commercialization.

First of all, it is an amendment to the law.

The statute of limitations for the regulatory sandbox is two years, and before that, an amendment to the law that allows the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to directly designate autonomous driving test zones must pass the National Assembly.

In addition, technology is key to how much autonomous trucks can ensure driver safety during the regulatory exception period.
