ancient Hybrid Creature Unearthed in iran Rewrites Understanding of Early civilization
TEHRAN, IRAN – A remarkably preserved, 5,000-year-old figurine depicting a creature half-bull, half-human has been discovered in southwestern Iran, offering unprecedented insight into the artistic and ritualistic practices of the Proto-Elamite civilization. The silver statuette, dubbed the “Kneeling Bull,” challenges previous assumptions about the sophistication of artistic expression and religious beliefs in the Copper Age Near East.
The Kneeling bull, unearthed in the ancient region of Elam – corresponding too modern-day southwestern Iran – is unique in its detailed depiction of a mythical hybrid. Unlike many contemporary artifacts, it doesn’t have a flat base, indicating it wasn’t intended for display.this discovery illuminates the Proto-Elamites’ advanced craftsmanship and provides a tangible link to their complex worldview, predating many well-known Mesopotamian cultures.
the figurine’s creation dates back to the Copper Age, when the Proto-Elamites flourished and notably invented cylinder seals – engraved cylinders used for administrative purposes, often featuring animals in human-like poses. According to Dr. Emily Hansen, an expert consulted on the find, the Kneeling Bull likely emerged from this tradition of crafting mythical animal-human hybrids. “The level of detail and the intentional pose suggest a refined understanding of both animal anatomy and symbolic portrayal,” Hansen stated.
Archaeologists believe the statuette played a role in ritualistic practices. The presence of limestone pebbles inside the figure and remnants of fabric adhering to its surface suggest ceremonial use. It may even have functioned as a “foundation figurine,” intentionally buried during the construction of Proto-elamite temples to consecrate the ground. If so, the Kneeling Bull was deliberately hidden from view, its purpose fulfilled only through its secret interment.
The discovery adds to the growing body of evidence demonstrating the Proto-Elamites’ important contributions to early civilization, including pioneering advancements in writing and administrative systems. Further research on the Kneeling Bull promises to unlock even more secrets about this captivating and influential culture.
