Kitchen tips: If you cook yourself, you live healthier (PHOTO) | Word & picture publisher

Baierbrunn (ots) Preparing something delicious yourself is fun – and it keeps you fit. “If you cook at home, you eat healthier on average,” advises the health magazine “Apotheken-Umschau”. Homemade is fresher, contains less fat and sugar and therefore has fewer calories. And tastes good, because healthy eating doesn’t mean giving up taste.

Freshness: Pay attention to cut edges

A balanced diet starts before you snip and stir while shopping and storing. The basis of a healthy meal plan is vegetables – the fresher the better. “Vitamins are lost during transport or storage,” says Monika Bischoff, nutritionist at the Center for Nutrition and Prevention at the Munich Hospital of the Merciful Brothers. Freshness is not only important for the taste: if the cut edges are dry or brownish, celery and mushrooms reveal that they have been waiting for buyers for a long time.

Frozen vegetables contain valuable ingredients

Fresh ingredients are available, for example, at the weekly market or in farm shops, but healthy eating is also possible with discounter products. If you don’t go shopping often, you can also use frozen vegetables, some of which contain even more valuable ingredients than supposedly fresh from the supermarket. But it is important that the products are unprocessed – for example, they do not contain any frying fat or cream.
