This year it is ten years since it tragic accident that has hit the Dutch royal family hard. At that time, Queen Beatrix (84) lost her son, Princess Mabel (53) her husband, and two small children lost their father.

On 17 February 2012, Prince Johan Friso and Prince Constantijn (52), brothers of the then Prince Willem-Alexander (55), went on a skiing holiday in Lech, Austria.

Shortly afterwards, the Dutch royal family received the shocking news that their own Prince Johan Friso was taken by an avalanche. He was in a coma for over a year and a half, before he passed away on 12 August 2013, aged 44.

Queen Beatrix abdicated during the course of Prince Johan Friso’s illness. She then received the title of princess, while Prince Willem-Alexander became king.

Today, Princess Mabel still has a very good and close relationship with the deceased husband’s family, and just a few days ago it became known that the widow has been awarded a very special royal order.

The Dutch royal house’s website states that King Willem-Alexander has awarded Princess Mabel Oranje the house rules.

The order was established in 1905, and is usually issued as a reward for merits by the king and the royal family.

The princess of the order for her many services to the royal house, it is stated.
