Kinepolis: ‘The last alternative to relaxation will be dropped’

The Kinepolis cinema group reacts disappointed to the decision of the Flemish government to close the cinemas again from Friday.

“We understand that the situation is serious,” says spokeswoman Anneleen Van Troos. ‘But we had worked hard to ensure that a cinema visit could take place safely. The rules in the sector protocol worked fine. And nine out of ten customers indicated that they were very satisfied with the safety in the cinemas. ‘

More people coming to the movies was encouraging, especially since the fourth quarter is traditionally the busiest period for us.

Because of the autumn weather and blockbusters like Tenet Kinepolis saw visitor numbers are rising. ‘While we were running at 25 percent of normal capacity in the summer, we were now approaching 40 to 50 percent of the capacity utilization. The fact that more people came to the movies was encouraging, especially since the fourth quarter is traditionally the busiest period for us, ‘says Van Troos.

‘That is why it is a shame that it is no longer an option to go and see a film during the autumn holidays. In recent weeks, the possibilities to relax have been so limited. Now the last alternative is also being dropped. ‘

Support for cinema operators is only becoming more urgent, says the Belgian Federation of Cinemas. ‘All the measures taken so far have already reduced the turnover enormously. Now only the subsidized halls are helped by government support. There is an urgent need for support for all operators. ‘
